Santos GLNG CEO Stephen Harty addressed industry leaders at the AFR Energy and Climate Summit held in Sydney in mid-October, where he shared his perspective on Australia’s current gas supply challenges and the path forward.

In his remarks, Stephen emphasised that Australia’s gas supply issues cannot be solved through short-term measures. “The real challenge lies in declining supply,” he said, highlighting the importance of long-term planning and collaboration between industry and government to ensure future energy security.

Stephen warned that short-term price interventions may deter investment, create long-term uncertainty, and ultimately exacerbate supply issues. “Stability and a clear investment environment are essential for ensuring we can meet future demand,” he added.

He reaffirmed GLNG’s ongoing commitment to supporting the domestic market, referencing previous instances where GLNG stepped up to help offset potential shortfalls. “We’ve responded before, and we’re prepared to do so again,” he said.

Looking ahead, Stephen noted that there is still time to improve east coast gas supply ahead of 2029. Projects like Santos’ Narrabri Gas Project, which has committed its gas to the domestic market, represent a key opportunity to boost local supply.

Stephen’s participation in the summit reinforces GLNG’s role as a responsible and proactive partner in Australia’s energy future.
